What To Do When You Have Got A Flat Tire During Your Journey?

  • Park the car safely and set the emergency brake. Keep the car in 1st gear or reverse if you have a manual transmission.

  • The first thing to do would be to remove the tire. You will have to loosen the lug nuts. As the first turn is the most difficult one it should be done before you jack up the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts in a star pattern.

  • Do not remove the lug nuts at once and use the jack after loosening them. Use the jack to lever the car up on the side where the tire needs to be changed. This is the reason why you would need level ground. You can not jack the car on an incline.

  • After jacking the car you can take out the lug nuts altogether. Remove the tire slowly and carefully as it can be heavy after removing the nuts.

  • Make sure the spare tire you have in your car is the same as the one you have taken out and matches with other tires. You don’t want to drive with three passenger car tires and one off-road tire.

  • Now replace the spare tire onto the screw prongs. Line up the screws with the holes in the tire and keep the air valve facing out.

  • Reattach the lug nuts in place using your hand at first and tighten them gradually but not fully. Lower the jack and bring your car back on the ground. Now you can tighten the bolts tightly using your tools.

At last the spare tire in place you can drive your car again. But remember to go to your tire store and get your flat tire fixed as soon as possible.

A Brief Introduction To The Process of Car Tire Manufacturing

In the previous blog, we gave a brief introduction to the components of a tire. In this blog, we will give you a brief introduction to the process of car tire manufacturing. A good tire supplier will always use good natural rubber or synthetic rubber during the manufacturing process. Apart from the rubber, other materials are also used. Another primary ingredient is carbon black which is a fine soft powder, created from crude oil or natural gas when burnt. Along with Sulfur other chemicals are used in tires too. Some of the chemicals, are first mixed with rubber and then heated. This produce specific tire characteristics such as high friction (but low mileage) for heavy-duty tires or high mileage (but lower friction) for a passenger car tire. So, lets take a look at it, in details.

Blend

The first step for manufacturing a tire is to mix the raw materials to form the rubber compound. At most, 30 ingredients are used for a tire’s rubber blend. The ingredient proportions depend on what type of tire is being manufactured. It’s composed of several types of rubber, fillers, and other ingredients which are then mixed in giant blenders known as Banbury mixers. These create a black gummy compound that’ll be sent on for milling.

Mill

When sent in for mill, each mix is then milled with additional heating to soften the batch and mix the chemicals. The batch goes through a mixer again, where more chemicals are added for formation. This is known as the final mix. During these steps, heat and friction are applied to the batch to soften the rubber and evenly distribute the chemicals.

After the mixing is over and the rubber has cooled, it goes through a powerful rolling mill where the rubber is cut into strips that will form the basic structure of your tire. During the milling stage, all the other elements of the tire are also prepared, some of which are then further coated in another type of rubber. Each strip is called a ply of the tire.

Build

The tire itself is constructed, from the inside out. When the beads of a tire are made, wire bundles are wrapped on a wire wrapping machine. The bundles are then formed into rings, and the rings are covered with rubber. The rubber of the tire tread and sidewall are manufactured separately with the help of an extruder. The sidewall rubber is covered with a protective plastic sheet and rolled. Tread rubber is sliced into several strips. They are then loaded into large, flat metal cases. Then all these components are placed in a tire-building machine that ensures every part is in its precise location. This results in what looks like a finished product. This is known as a green tire.

Cure

The green tire is pressed with the help of a large mold, compressing all of the parts of the tire together and giving the tire its final shape. After curing is complete, the tire is removed from the mold for cooling and then tested thoroughly. Each tire is inspected for flaws such as bubbles in the rubber of the tread, sidewall, and interior of the tire. Then, the tire is placed on a test wheel, inflated, and spun. Sensors in the test wheel measure the balance of the tire and determine whether the tire will run in a straight line or not.

Inner Liner

An airtight layer of synthetic rubber which is the modern equivalent of an inner tube. The inner liner assures that the tire will hold high-pressure air inside, minimizing diffusion through the rubber structure.

Body Ply

Also known as Carcass ply it is the layer above the inner liner. It consists of one layer of rubber, one layer of reinforcing fabric, and the second layer of rubber. Body plies give the tire structure strength. Truck tires, off-road tires, and aircraft tires have progressively more plies. The fabric cords are highly flexible but a bit inelastic.

Sidewall

It protects the side of the tire from impact with curbs and the road. Important details about the tire are written on the sidewall, such as tire size and speed rating. Sidewalls are non-reinforced extruded profiles with additives to give the sides of the tire good abrasion resistance and environmental resistance.

Beads

They clamp firmly against the tire’s rim to ensure an airtight fit and keep the tire properly seated on the rim. Bead wire is coated with special alloys of bronze or brass. Coatings protect the steel from corrosion. Bead rubber includes supplements to maximize the strength and toughness of tires.

Apex

The apex is a triangular extruded profile that mates against the bead. The apex provides a cushion between the rigid bead and the flexible inner liner and body ply assembly.

Belt Package

Belts consist of a layer of rubber, a layer of closely spaced steel cords, and the second layer of rubber. Belts give the tire strength and dent resistance while allowing it to remain flexible. It also reduces friction heating and helps maintain the shape of the tire when driving fast.

Tread

Tread is the most important part of the tire. It provides traction and grip while driving and is designed to resist wear, abrasion, and heat. Tread compound development is a bit difficult, as hard compounds have long wear characteristics but poor traction whereas soft compounds have good traction but poor wear characteristics.

Cushion Gum

Many higher-performing tires include an extruded component between the belt package and the tread to isolate the tread from mechanical wear from the steel belts.
